Music Medals
from the Associated Board (ABRSM)
...all you need to know

What are Music Medals?
Music Medals are new assessments from the Associated Board designed for pupils learning in groups. They have been developed over five years with the support of teachers and pupils from some 30 music services around the UK. There are five progressive levels: Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Depending on level, a Music Medal takes between five and ten minutes to complete and can take place during normal lesson time. Each medal covers the following core activities:

· Playing with others (Ensemble)
· Playing solo (Solo)
· Musicianship skills (Options)

Music Medals do not require an external examiner to be present as teachers themselves are the assessors and they are responsible for recording the Medals assessment on video. The video is then sent to the Associated Board for quality assurance by moderators. Full training is then provided for all teacher-assessors and moderators.

Who are Music Medals assessments available to?

Initially the assessments will only be available to pupils whose teachers are associated with a local music service. Long-term, they will hopefully be available more widely.

What makes Music Medals different from
existing Associated Board graded exams?

· Assessments take place in normal lesson time.
· Assessments are conducted by the teacher; video recorded and sent to the Associated Board to be moderated; there is no external examiner present.
· Music Medals include an ensemble element.
· All entries for Music Medals will be made online.
